about

Fictional Music Out-Takes for 2001

The summer of 2020 was an interesting time. We were deep in the pandemic, mostly sequestered in our respective “pods” and even though it was summer I took refuge in my subterranean creative space making all kinds of music and sounds to escape the Hollywood-movie-turned-reality that was life at that time.

I dabbled, experimented and created many things to pass the time, but one project stuck with me: The idea of a series of fictional musical out-takes from Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I had been experimenting with a bunch of synthesizer sounds and guitar pedals that were ‘very sci-fi’. These sounds fit pretty much nowhere in my body of work, so after creating a half-dozen tracks I abandoned the project. The cutting room floor, as it were, is many feet deep at this point and frequently stuff just ends up getting pitched, deleted or lost when a hard drive goes bad, but these tracks kept popping up. I’d see the folder, listen to them and each time think: These are actually pretty good.

The tracks became even better when I imagined the alternate reality where the tracks were slid in between Strauss and Ligeti on the original soundtrack. In fact, I spent a whole summer in my early 20s listening to a worn out cassette tape of the 2001 soundtrack a decade before I ever saw the movie. From the music on the tape, I had constructed my own movie/story of sorts in my imagination. These tracks were more informed by that imaginary, alternate reality telling of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
